About us:
History: The Maury County Senior Center was dedicated on December 9, 1979. The senior center movement was started in Columbia, Tennessee in 1961 by Reverend James Taylor, Riverside Methodist Church. Reverend Taylor organized his church and the community into a senior citizens club.
In 1974 the City of Columbia established a Human Resource Agency which took advantage of State and Federal funding. Mr. Charles Lea, who at that time was Director of Aging for the South Central Development District, became an active member and advocate in the senior citizens movement through the Governor's Advisory Council. Mr. Lea assisted Geneva Patrick, Director of the City of Columbia Human Services, to organize and charter the Friendly Senior Citizen's Club. Also in 1974, Anna Bostelman, R.N. Geriatric Coordinator, Columbia Area Mental Health Center, became actively involved in organizing, funding and chartering what has come to be the Maury County Senior Citizens, Inc. The National Guard Armory was the first site chosen, which was arranged by Mayor Morgan. Through generous contributions by the City of Columbia, the County Court, and the community the center was relocated to its present site.
